The new release candidate of AutoMOD for phpBB3 has finally been released.
Monday, May 25th, 2009
One of the common problems with phpbb is that the forum design expands in width when users post images that are too wide for the forum. Here are two fixes to this problem.
There is a fairly advanced mod for phpbb3 that allows you to apply an automatic image resize in forum posts, together with an optional lightbox. You can find it here.
For those of you who are interested in a less advanced solution, here is a little hack that will automatically resize all posted images down to a width of 550px wide.

With this hack, images that are too large to fit, like this:

are automatically resized in a size that fits, like this one:

A useful tip for webmasters:
A particularly useful feature for phpbb template designers or amateur coders making changes to the phpbb style: instead of emptying the cache every time you make a change to the code, simply switch the cache off by following these instructions.

Failure to purge the cache is a commonly made mistake by aspiring forum webmasters using phpbb3. After modifying the forum style, always purge the cache before checking your changes.

Well, not exactly automated phpbb software upgrades, but at least an easy way to install mods, like easymod used to work under phpbb2. It’s called automod and you can download it here.

When you have as little talent as I do for color design, there are a few resources which may come in handy. All these resources basically work the same way: give them a base color, and they will suggest other colors that work well with it. This is useful to create a coordinated scheme for the background, highlights, headers, links, etc.
1. Colorschemer

Colorschemer features an extensive collection of color schemes. You can also buy a nifty little app for your desktop or download free dashboard widgets.

2. ws Color Scheme Generator
Color Scheme Generator is a web-based app that provides an instant preview of how your site will look like. It also has some specific features for sites designed for color blind people.

3. Adobe Kuler

Perhaps the strongest contender in this category is Adobe’s Kuler. See for yourself in this tutorial video on AdobeTV.

Wordpress 2.7 is here with a new design for the admin side. I’ll try to start work on an update for Mike Lothar’s Nosebleed, Ad Infinitum and Conundrum templates for Wordpress soon.
Here’s some info about the new Wordpress version:
The autoupdate feature – which was already available for plugins – is now available for the whole software. If only phpbb could take a cue!

The phpbb forum software has now been updated to version 3.0.4. Get it here.
Templates designed for 3.0.3 will also work under 3.0.4.
