Europe Guide for Holidays
At the northern border of Europe is the Arctic Ocean, with the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. There are around 50 countries within Europe (though borders have changed considerably over the past 20 years) and there are differences in the level of development of facilities different regions have for tourists and visitors. Generally, western, southern and most of northern Europe have well developed provision for tourists with a wide range of hotels for all levels from budget to luxury. Towards the east some countries are working hard to catch up and many are rapidly developing their tourist infrastructure, and larger cities have high standards of accommodation.
Europe’s many countries speak a number of languages, and though international travel expansion has meant that most major city hotels will have facility with English, this may be limited in smaller towns and some types of accommodation. One primary reason for many international visitors to travel to Europe is to explore the varied history, architecture, art and culture, and there is just so much of it! There are sites from pre-history such as Stonehenge in England or cave paintings in France, and buildings and artefacts from Etruscan, Greek, Roman, and Moorish civilisations across Italy, Spain and around the Mediterranean, Medieval Romanesque, Renaissance, and Gothic architecture and art in galleries and cities around Europe, not to mention the wonderful treasures from the modern era – such as Gaudi’s architecture in Barcelona or the major art galleries of Paris or London.
