Antigua And Barbuda Hotels

Known as ‘Land of 365 Beaches’, the Caribbean country of Antigua and Barbuda is famous for its luxury resorts and winter hideaways for the rich and famous. It really is a tropical paradise, with turquoise sea and soft white sand. It offers the usual activities from boat trips to snorkelling, with a good range of restaurants and bars. The country’s history dates back to 2400 BC. Christopher Columbus named the island.

Sir Christopher Codrington established sugar cultivation in the 17th-century, and at Betty's Hope a restored sugar mill can be visited. Nelson landed on Antigua in 1784 and British influence is still strong. English is spoken and cricket is popular (the country is the birthplace of Viv Richards cricket).

The capital, St. John’s, is on Antigua. From Shirley Heights there is a stunning view (and equally impressive sunset) looking out over the English Harbour, and in summer plenty of music, food and drinking.

The little island of Barbuda is much calmer and more peaceful, and has an impressive bird sanctuary. Folk pottery can be found at Sea View Farm Village, using a fascinating process involving local clay and firing in an open fire, and every August the national Carnival celebrates the abolition of slavery.
