With ten provinces and three territories, after Russia, Canada is the biggest country in the world, but with a population of only about 35m people. It lies north of the USA and reaches from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans, and north into the Arctic Circle. Canada has a long history of occupation by tribal peoples, and today this tradition colours a diverse culture. It is democratic, a member of the Commonwealth, and recognises the British Monarchy. All this makes it a rich and varied place, ancient and modern, with major cities - the capital is Ottawa and the biggest city is Toronto - and vast open spaces of many landscapes.
The main language is English, but French is spoken in Quebec which has strong cultural ties with France. This is a prosperous, civilised and successful nation, well-educated and generally stable; the Canadian dollar is a reliable currency - and they drive on the right. There is wilderness in Canada, with its vast forest and mountain regions, its prairies and many, many freshwater lakes - more than any country in the world.
There are two fine coastlines, east and west, where the climate can be temperate. However, winters can be harsh in many places, though there are high summer temperatures in some inland areas. There is stunning scenery with glaciers, volcanoes, arctic tundra, the Rocky Mountains and the Great Lakes.
There are only just over three people per square kilometre, so for those who like solitude, it is not crowded.

Places to visit in Canada
Here are three suggestions of places to base your visit in Canada:
The mountains and west coast
Especially for the activity-oriented tourist the west stretching from Alberta to the islands of British Columbia have huge peaks, world-class canoe routes and skiing. Or you can relax in the hot springs of Banff or travel by car, bus or train through the magnificent Rocky Mountains, and visit Vancouver.
Northern Canada
Bordering three oceans, the north is an untouched wilderness and where the Northern Lights are an awe-inspiring sight. Start at Baffin Island and marvel at the igloo, get involved with dogsled racing at Yellowknife and trace the history of the gold rush at Dawson City.
Central Canada
Whether you want to shop, to eat or just to explore the different and idiosyncratic Canadian cities, youre going to have problems choosing. You may want to visit the buzz of Toronto, or go to the national capital of Ottawa to see the red coated guards and the grand boulevards, or to experience the underground world sights and sounds of francophone Montreal - but why not fit them all in your tour?
Things to do in Canada
5 Ideas for places to visit:
Quebec City - explore the steep and narrow alleys of this picturesque city with the ambience of old Europe.
Calgary - the spirit of the Wild West lives on at the Calgary stampede
Niagara - See the Niagara Falls and follow the Niagara Heritage Trail - or why not a jet-boat tour?
The Yukon - the place for outdoor adventures - hike, fish, cross-country ski, kayak or snowmobile.
Newfoundland - try a self-drive tour adventure visiting Halifax, Nova Scotia and Cape Bretons National Park.
