Places to visit in Colombia
Here are three suggestions for places to base your visit to Colombia
Cartagena and the beach resorts
The Spanish colonial port of Cartagena is a picturesque walled port of pastel-coloured buildings, cathedrals, plazas, overhanging balconies, Spanish colonial architecture and
17th century forts - and is a World Heritage Site. Nearby to the south are Colombias major holiday resorts with white-sand beaches and scuba diving. Also see the Volcan de
Lodo El Totumo a mud-spewing volcano and take a mud bath and then rinse off in the lagoon!
Bogota and surroundings
This ancient city was the pre-Columbian capital of the Chibcha Indians and is a blend of old and new, with Spanish colonial buildings next to modern skyscrapers. You can walk
through La Candelaria, the colonial heart, explore Bogotás museums and churches and try taking a cable up to the Moserratte Convent to see the spectacular views. Take a drive
to Villa de Leyva and take guided trips into wonderful countryside of lakes, caves and waterfalls and El Fossil.
Medellin and Coffee Country
Medellin has had a big turnaround from its days of bad press. Its one of Latin Americas most pleasant cities surrounded by stunning views, and having mild temperatures all the
year round. Visit the Botero museum and take a cable car up to the viewing point. Take a day trip to Santa Fee de Antioquia the regions oldest and best preserved settlement -
and if you can take a trip through the fabulous scenery to the Coffee Region at Manizales. Walk through the coffee groves or bike or horseback the mountain tracks.
