Ecuador Hotels

In South America, to the south of Colombia is the Republic of Ecuador. Situated on the coast of the Pacific Ocean and with Peru to the East it also interestingly straddles the equator. It is because of this that the country got its name. With an area of nearly 110 thousand square miles, it is just over twice the size of England and is home to over 14. 5 million ethnically diverse people.

The main ethnic group is the Mestizos, descended from the indigenous population and the Spanish colonists. Nearly a quarter of the population is Amerindian, one of the indigenous populations of the Americas. The main religion in Ecuador is Roman Catholic, making up nearly 75% with the other 25% being Protestants.

As a country, Ecuador sees great diversity in its climate, mainly because of the differing altitudes between the mountainous regions and the low-lying flatlands. The Pacific side has a very tropical climate with a rainy season, whereas the highlands are comparatively dry. Holidays to Ecuador are very popular and suit people looking for many different things in a holiday.

There are amazing opportunities for diving, cruises and ecotourism to volcano tours and jungle and rainforest trips. As the Galapagos Islands are part of Ecuador many people visit the islands for their biodiversity. Getting to Ecuador form the UK is normally via Heathrow, with high season being December to January and June to August, although being situated on the equator it is temperate all year round.
