Guadeloupe Hotels

The subtropical paradise of Guadeloupe, is a collection of nine islands in the Caribbean, each with a different character. Christopher Columbus gave the country its name, and apparently discovered the pineapple here. It is sometimes known as the Butterfly Islands because the two main islands make the shape of wings. As a part of France its currency is the Euro and almost everyone understands French. The island of Grande-Terre to the east is a tourist magnet, with turquoise waters and pale sand.

All kinds of attractions can be found here, from bars and restaurants to a wide range of water sports such as scuba diving and snorkelling. For those who want to catch an intimate glimpse of the astonishing variety of tropical fish but prefer a more sedate experience, a glass-bottomed boat can be hired. The island of Basse-Terre to the west contains the national park, where visitors can trek to the top of the volcano La Soufriére or walk to a number of glorious waterfalls.

Other things to try in Guadeloupe include the local rum at one of the distilleries and the street-vendors’ delicious, creamy coconut ice cream. Look out for dancing and music at various street festivals, and the amazing black and white cemetery at Morne à l’eau.
