The diversity and sheer size of the Indian sub-continent will take your breath away. From the Himlayas in the far north to the southern ocean tip this is a country that teems with life - the most populous democracy on earth. Its history makes it what it is today - it’s a long history of culture, empires, civilisation and trade. Here you will find deep poverty but also great riches, and an emerging nation that is going places. Its capital is New Delhi but the biggest city is Mumbai, and many of its citizens speak English, a proud legacy of colonial times that now serves the nation well.
Its population is a huge 1,210,000,000, with over 350 people per square kilometre, so you are likely to meet plenty of interesting local people. Though there is much that is modern in India, there is plenty of historic architecture, dating back millennia in some cases; the ancient caste system is also still evident. It is classified as having an ecology of mega-diversity with a high proportion of species in its many landscapes that range from tropical rainforest to coniferous mountain forest.
The pressure from the human population has been managed to some extent with the formation of national parks and protected areas. India prides itself on its technological achievements and it also takes equal pride in its culture, history and landscapes. It is both a great manufacturing nation and a place of long tradition that led to unparalleled pinnacles of achievement, like the Taj Mahal.
In short, India - it’s a big place.

Places to visit in India
Here are three suggestions for places to base your visit to India
Goa
Goa still has the remnants of its golden hippy-living days, but the discerning visitor can find much more. The main draws are the wonderful beaches - but try to visit Panjii the capital or go inland to the markets at Mapusa. Everywhere you will find remnants of the old colonial Portugal legacy.
Jaipur
Still very popular with tourists though this, the Pink City is chaotic and congested, but this city at the gateway to the desert state of Rajasthan has a great deal to offer. You can travel to stunning hill forts and palaces and be fascinated at the way world-class hotels can co-exist with camel carts, the bustling bazaars and hustling rickshaw drivers. See the elephant Festival in March
Eco-tourism in the Himalayas
Still at a very new stage, Eco-tourism has arrived in India because of the conscious efforts to save the fragile Himalayan eco-system, and the culture and heritage of the indigenous peoples. So a soft adventure tourism- is available in the Himalayan belt and packaged with holiday camping to give acceptable eco-tourism - offerings such as Camps in the jungles of Kamataka, House Boats in Kerala and Tree Houses at Vythiri are some of the kinds of holidays on offer.
