Jordan is a stunning arid country, bordered by Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria, the West Bank and Israel and also sharing control of the Dead Sea. Jordan has had a long and conflicted history, with many empires and states moving through the country, trying to maintain an ownership. It is well known for many sights within the area, perhaps most for the ancient city of Petra which is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. This is an ancient city that has been cut into the desert rock. The country is mainly urbanised, with vast, reaching cities that offer a myriad of attractions within themselves.
There is a lively night scene in the larger cities, with many offering nightclubs, discos and late opening bars, alongside this is the more traditional shisha lounges. The cities provide a perfect base for sightseeing, with many ancient buildings and wonderfully preserved structures, but also the more modern side of life in Jordan. There are many opportunities to explore the shopping centres, which feature a large number of local boutiques and an array of restaurants that specialise in traditional cuisine as well as catering for other tastes.
There is also the chance for sea seekers to take the unique opportunity to bask by the Dead Sea, even to stay at its shore side in one of the chic resorts or parks that have sprung up around the attraction. Jordan really does offer so much to visitors that it is difficult to know where to start your holiday from, one thing that is definite is that you will not have any difficulty in finding places to see in this amazing country.

Places to visit in Jordan
Here are ideas for three places to base your visit to Jordan
Amman
Amman, the capital of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordon, originally spread over seven hills, now has extended to 19 and is home to around half of Jordons population. Amman is called the White City because of the box-shaped, light coloured houses with flat roofs that cover the hills. As well as the ancient minarets, pavement markets and crumbling remains of past civilisations there are the modern buildings, shops and restaurants, blending old with new. The Ottoman-style King Hussein Mosque is at the centre of downtown, and is surrounded by the buzz of the exotic city and the noises of the souq. Amman dates back 5500 years to the time of it being the capital of the Ammonites, Rabbath Ammon of the Old Testament and overlooking the city is the citadel, the site of ancient Rabbath Ammon, and at its foot is the rather impressive roman amphitheatre, the remains of the time when Amman was Philadelphia, the Roman city. Amman is an excellent base to explore Jordan, as you can drive anywhere in the country in five hours or less.
Petra
The ancient rose-red city of Petra is Jordons most famous attractions, set within a deep canyon near the town of Wadi Musa. Carved into rock and protected by mountains on all sides this powerful fortress of Petra, was built 2,000 years ago when the Nabateans from Arabia settled in the area and controlled the passage of traders crossing their land from India and Arabia. Their wealth created this amazing city of tombs, water channels, temples and decorative buildings with intricate facades carved out of solid rock, and including the Treasury and the Monastery.
Aqaba - the beach resort
Aqaba is situated on the shores of the Red Sea and is a port and wells as a seaside resort. The tourist resort of Aqaba is known for its fantastic diving opportunities, the glorious climate and lovely sandy beaches. The greatest attraction is the coral reef and rated the best in the world, and giving opportunities for divers and snorkellers. In Aqaba you can enjoy other watersports such as swimming, waterskiing parasailing, and fishing - or just sunbathing. If youre interested in history, then Aqaba has sites dating back 4000 years, including probably the worlds oldest church from the 3rd century AD, the remains of a medieval walled city of Ayla, and a Mamaluke fort. It is also well situated for a trip to see Wadi Rum or Petra.
