In East Africa, on the coast of the Indian Ocean is the Republic of Kenya, bordered by Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda and Tanzania. It is sat on the equator, making it a very hot country, with not much difference in the length of days throughout the year. The country is named after Mount Kenya, which is the highest peak in in Africa. It is approximately 580,000 square kilometers and is home to around 39 million people. The official language is Swahili as well as English and because of the large tourist trade within the country English is widely spoken.

The climate of Kenya is widely variable, the coastline is positivity tropical whereas the inland northeast parts of the country are arid and dry. Whilst the temperature is warm all year round, it can become quite chilly over night especially at the higher elevations. The hottest part of the year is February and March, which precedes the long rain season in March to June.

The coldest period is July and August, which is followed by the short rain season in October to December. Kenyan tourism is noted for its wildlife and has many wildlife reserves open for tourists. What is amazing is that Kenya is home to the ‘Big Five’ animals of Africa, the lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino and elephant.

Many visitors come especially to watch the wildebeest migration that occurs between June and September and sees millions of animals taking part. Flight times from Heathrow are between 8. 5 hours to nearly 11 hours, depending where in Kenya you fly to.

Recent political unrest has severely damaged the tourist trade to the country, but for those who are brave, Kenya still provides an amazing adventure and you can now pick up some very low cost deals as the country tries to rebuild its attraction to foreign tourists.
