Latvia Hotels

Latvia (Republic of Latvia) is a country in the north east of Europe, located in the Baltic region. It is approximately 1043 miles from the United Kingdom if flying into its capital, Riga. Surrounding countries are Estonia, Lithuania, Russia and Belarus. The main languages spoken are Latvian and Russian and the country’s population is approximately 2. 2 million.

Latvia’s climate is classed as continental with its warm summers, mild in the spring and autumn with winters being extremely cold and quite severe with heavy snowfall. Latvia is becoming increasingly popular with tourists as people discover its beautiful resorts by the Baltic Sea. The stunning coastline is unspoilt and stretches for 531km.

Latvia has approximately 19 ski resorts and is therefore popular for keen skiers, particularly cross-country skiers. The capital, Riga, is also the country’s largest city and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and therefore attracts thousands of visitors throughout the year. Accommodation and food in Latvia is still quite cheap compared to European standards.

The cuisine is excellent and there is a wide choice of fine hotels wherever you choose to stay. It is a very fertile country also and is known for being extensively covered by beautiful pine forests with many nature and hiking trails and lakes to discover.

Places to visit in Latvia
Here are three suggestions for places to base your visit to Latvia

Riga

Riga is situated at the mouth of the Dauigava River, on the shores of the Gulf of Riga of the Baltic Sea. It is rich in history, culture - and a range of activities and entertainments. Dating from 1201, Central part of the city is a Unesco World Heritage site, and has the most remarkable mixture of architectural styles - Gothic, Baroque, Classical and Art Nouveau, and has a unique collection of wooden buildings. Its lively cultural life expresses itself during the summer with a range of music festivals from classical and opera to jazz and rock. If you have time its worth looking round the number of museums and art galleries.

Baltic Beaches: Jurmala

Around 20km from Riga, Jurmala is the largest resort in the Baltic, and has wonderful long white sandy beaches, pine forests and handsome buildings. It also has a long tradition of health continued in the modern Spa hotels in the resort. The beaches have a full range of resources during the summer, and the sea is quite shallow and good for children. Also visit the Livu Aquapark - the largest indoor water park in Northern Europe, or explore Kemeri National Park and Ragakapa.

North Latvia: Cesis

Cesis is in the middle of one of the historic regions of Latvia, Vidzeme. Part of it is in the Gauja National Park, the other in the historical region of Piebalga. Cesis is one of the most quaint and scenic medieval towns in Latvia. It has a medieval castle and a 13th century St Johns church. Try hiking or bike tours along the winding roads, quiet forest tracks and the river banks you cant visit by car. Admire the picturesque sandstone cliffs on the banks of the Gauja, the Brasla and Amata as you take a tour down the river - mind the rapids!
