Madagascar is a country in the Indian Ocean off the south-east coast of Africa. It comprises one large island and several much smaller ones, including the charmingly named Nosy Be. Madagascar became a separate island around 135 million years ago, the consequence of which is that many species of plants and animals have evolved which are unique to the island. This has led to Madagascar becoming a popular place of study for biologists. Several of its national parks are UNESCO World Heritage Sites in order to protect the wildlife.

Madagascar’s capital is the city of Antananarivo which is situated on a high plateau in the centre of the island. The climate is tropical along the coastal areas, temperate further inland and drier to the south. There is a rainy season between around November to April when thunderstorms are common.

Most of the population speak Malagasy but French is also spoken by many as well as some English, particularly by the younger generation. Visitors do not need a visa to enter Madagascar as long as they do not say for longer than 30 days. There are plenty of opportunities to participate in water sports on the coast and visitors will find that the local food is inexpensive.

There is no safe drinking water on Madagascar so bottled water is a must.
