Places to visit in Malta
Here are three suggestions for places to base your visit to Malta
Valletta
Maltas capital and World Heritage city, Valletta is an excellent starting point for a Malta holiday. Its soaring steeples and domes show its historical and cultural background. It was built in the 16th century by the Knights Hospitallers, and its streets are full of wonderful churches, palaces, courtyards and other baroque architecture. The narrow streets have also a number of tiny antique and jewellery shops - go to Republic Street and Merchants Street for quality fashion and music. Valletta has regular plays and concerts, see the Museum of Archaeology or the War Museum at Fort St Elmo for its period re-enactment, and dont miss the impressive 16th century Grand Masters Palace and St Johns Cathedral.
Beaches and Sun Holidays
Malta has beaches of every description to suit anyone from sunbathers to windsurfers - there are beaches with golden or red sand, rocks and blue lagoons, secluded and popular. With Maltas climate beach holidays last well into October. The main popular sandy beach resorts are in the north: Mellieha Bay, Ghajn Tuffieha and Golden Bay, and there are quieter beaches at the tip of Malta, such as Paradise Bay and Armier. In Gozo, the most beautiful red sand beach is Ramla I Hanra - on both Gozo and Comino there are plenty of rocky inlets with clear waters perfect from snorkelling. Enjoy water sports and activities such as windsurfing, jet and water skiing, parakiting and other fun rides. What more could you want?
Rabat (Victoria) on Gozo
Gozo is about half the size of Malta and is a quieter, relaxed holiday option, and Rabat (renamed Victoria for a while by the Colonial British) is a good centre for all of Gozos attractions. Full of historical and cultural heritage, (St Paul was said to have been shipwrecked here in AD60) dont miss the Museum of Rman Antiquities and its two sets of Medieval catacombs of St Paul and St Agatha (the latter with gorgeous frescoes and underground chapel. Rabat is spread beneath the Citadel, the walled castle that dominates the island. Every morning the town square has an open market selling silver jewellery and Gozo lace. Check out the beaches and other areas of historical interest on the island.
