Morocco Hotels

Within Northern Africa lies the country of Morocco, Rabat is its capital city. Its borders are Spain, Algeria and the Western Sahara and its coastline is on the Atlantic Ocean. Morocco’s landscape is mountainous with the ‘Rif’ and ‘Atlas’ ranges. History Morocco’s origins date back to the ‘Paleolithic times’. In the 7th century ‘Umayyad Arabs’ conquered the area.

Morocco gradually developed into a region of power and fought off Portuguese and Ottoman invaders. The ‘Berber Dynasties’ were established all over the Western Mediterranean by 11th century and the ‘Merinids’ came to power over Morocco during the 13th century. By the 15th century the end of Islamic rule in Iberia saw a surge of Muslims and Jews imigrating to Morocco.

During ‘Ahmad al-Mansur’s’ reign wealth was brought to the region. However, after his death the Western Sahara area was divided up among his sons. In 1666 the ‘Alaouite Dynasty’ came together with the ‘Sultan ale’ and took over rule.

Much later the ‘Treaty of Fez’ saw morocco divided up into French and Spanish after the Moroccan crisis and the Agadir crisis. Morocco became independent of France and Spain in 1956. Climate Morocco has a Mediterranean climate.

However, within the mountains there are several micro climates ranging from Mediterranean and Maritime. The ‘Mid-Atlas Mountains’ are covered in dense forests and vegetation whereas the ‘East Atlas Mountains’ are more sheltered with dry and hot summers especially near the Sahara down in the lowlands. Cuisine Morocco’s cuisine is full of diversity ranging from the Berber, Moorish, European, Mediterranean and Jewish palate.

Spices are used in Moroccan cooking such as saffron, and other condiments are used in abundance to for example mint, Tiliouine, olives, oranges, lemons, chicken, beef and lamb. The most famous dish is Couscous and pastilla tajine and harira is a popular drink, it is green tea with mint. Places of Interest While visiting Morocco there are several places of interest including ‘Bab Rouah’ which was built in 1197, the seaside resort of ‘Asilah’, the gate entrance to the city of Rabat which dates back to 1500 BC.

Cities worth visiting are Rabat, Marrakech, Tangier, Fez and Casablanca. Morocco also has great beaches, interesting bazaars, riads and medinas. Other places of interest include ‘El Bahia Palace’ in Marrakech, the ‘Saadian Tombs’, the ‘Friouato Caves’ and the ‘Menara Gardens’.
