Mozambique Hotels

Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world. A former colony of Portugal (with Portuguese still its official language), its inhabitants waged a vicious civil war from 1977 to 1992. Since then the economy has boomed and tourism is increasing. It has a tropical climate with a wet season from October to March. The capital city is the attractive Maputo, with its Portuguese-inspired architecture, offering markets, cafes and museums.

Mozambique now has a great atmosphere, with a long coastline on the Indian Ocean offering diving, snorkelling and fabulous beaches. The south of the country has good transport links and accommodation, and visitors can go on a safari in the Gorongosa National Park, or camp and hike on Mount Gorongosa. Called ‘The Pearl of the Indian Ocean’, the Bazaruto Archipelago consisting of five islands, has been named a National Park.

It offers top-end luxury accommodation with stunning coral reefs, dunes and various boating, fishing and diving activities. Across the Zambesi in the north is a wilderness, with the exception of a few luxury island resorts and the Ilha de Moçambique, a delightful place on a small island attached to the mainland by a long bridge. It is a mix of colonial and old Swahili architecture, with an old stone town, and a reed town.

It also has a museum and fort.
