Norway is Europe's northernmost country renowned for its spectacular fjords and mountainous terrain. It shares borders with Sweden and Finland. It is a medium sized country with a population of 4. 9 million. The main language is Norwegian.
Holidaymakers to Norway will discover a country which offers vast areas of exceptional natural beauty, a rich cultural heritage and one of the highest standards of living in the world. Each region of Norway has something unique to offer. Western Norway provides easy access to fjords and mountains for hiking, glacier walking and fishing.
Eastern Norway is known for its wilderness, rugged mountains and the Jotunheimen National Park. The capital city, Oslo is to be found here and is famed for its picturesque setting. Southern Norway comes alive in the summer as Norwegians head there for their seaside holidays.
Charming towns and villages are strung along the rocky coastline overlooking the many islands and skerries scattered offshore. The area is characterised by pretty white wooden houses and flowering gardens. Northern Norway's landscape changes from mountainous wilderness to endless tundra.
Here it is possible to experience the thrill of the northern lights and the midnight sun. Visitors to this part of Norway can find out more about the lives of the indigenous people, the Sami. Norway is a year-round holiday destination; in the summer holidaymakers can visit the coast and explore the beautiful cities and in the winter the snow offers adventure seekers every imaginable winter sport.
There are no longer any direct ferries from the UK to Norway but it is possible to travel by train from London, via the Eurostar to Brussels and then to Cologne, Copenhagen and overnight to Norway. Most people, however, fly from the major airports to Oslo which takes 2½-3 hours .

Places to visit in Norway
Here are three suggestions for places to base your visit to Norway
Oslo
Oslo is the oldest of the Scandinavian capitals and a blend of modern style and traditional architecture. Wide streets, squares, cafes and restaurants give Oslo a very pleasant ambience. Its situation, at the head of a fjord and surrounded by enormous forests, gives it marvellous scenery and views - and wilderness areas within the city. Visitors enjoy seeing the museums, shopping or skiing & skating in winter.
Lofoten
Lofoten is a visually stunning archipelago just off the Norwegian coast just outside Norwegian Lapland. The islands have dramatic coastlines, narrow straits, tall peaks, as well as quiet coves and windswept beaches, and harbours. Try an Orca safari.
Central Norway
Stay at Trondheim, Norways first capital, and visit Ronos, whose timber houses are World Heritage listed, or try the mountain area of Dovre for hiking and skiing. Tondelag is famous for its salmon rivers - not only can you fish, but follow a hiking trail in the Bymarka forest outside Trondheim - or try a musk ox safari at Dovre.
