Portugal Hotels
Portugal is a country of about 10m people which occupies a broad coastal strip on the western end of the Iberian peninsula. Although a relatively small country, from the earliest time of exploration it had a strong maritime and colonial tradition in Africa and in southern America - a force to be reckoned with on the high seas. As well as its territory on the mainland, the islands of Madeira and the Azores in the Atlantic are also Portuguese and popular with travellers who find there some fascinating landscapes that include forests, volcanic peaks and lakes. Landscapes of the country on the mainland include mountains, plains and rolling hills, but it is for its coastline that Portugal is best known, and the holiday destinations along it that enjoy a warm Mediterranean climate. The coastline is also a mecca for migrating birds, and therefore for bird watchers too, with over 600 species passing through.
Because of its strong connection with the sea, Portugal has always been a fishing nation and you are likely to find plenty of seafood on the menu. Over the centuries the country has absorbed many people and cultures, and it has some striking architecture, some of it quite ancient and ornate with influences far from Europe. Portuguese people are said to be warm, laid-back and friendly, mainly Catholic, and the happy result of many centuries of mingled incoming peoples.

Places to visit in Portugal
Here are three suggestions for places to base your visit to Portugal
The North and Porto
The north has rolling landscape interspersed with dense forests and mountains and is home to the vinho verde wine, whilst its capital Porto is named after its most famous drink. Porto is situated on the hills overlooking the Douro River and you can see its characteristic sailboats the "Barcos Rabelos" which were used to ship the port from the vineyards. Take a drive along quiet roads or take a river cruise. Visit also Braga for its religious monuments, Viana do Castelo, or Vila Nova de Gaia and other coastal resorts and fishing villages well known for their seafood restaurants.
The Algarve
Portugals first choice travel destination with beaches, tourist resorts and white washed towns full of foreigners in summer. Outside these areas you will find quiet castle towns and beautiful untouched areas of coastline. Visit Monchique with wonderful views over steep wooded countryside, Tavira with a history dating back to the Romans, and on the rugged west coast, Sagres and Carrapateira for surfing.
Lisbon
Lisbon is Portugals capital and capital of the Lisbon region in the west. Lisbon shows its past with its renovated grand palaces, magnificent churches and castle displaying its rich culture. Lisbon itself has a number of excellent museums of modern and ancient art, but as well as history and culture Lisbon has a lively nightlife. Youll enjoy wandering Lisbons narrow lanes and watching those bright yellow trams or walk along the seaside or try window shopping in high-class Chiado.
