Places to visit in Russia
Here are three suggestions of places to base your visit to Russia
St Petersburg
Situated on the River Neva St Petersburg is the magnificent city of Peter the great, and brings the visitor very close to Russias past. Most of the must-see sights are found around the Nevsky Prospect, the main avenue, and include the Hermitage, the Russian Museum, the Mikhail Castle, the Summer Garden and the St Isaac and Kazan Cathedral.
Lake Baikal
Along the border between Siberian Russia and Mongolia between the rugged hills and rolling grasslands in a region of heartstopping beauty is Lake Baikal the largest Lake in Eurasia and the deepest lake in the world. In the winter Baikal freezes over (try a sleigh ride tour). In the summer you can take a boat tour, or hike amongst the forests and waterfalls of Baikals parks. Freshwater seals live in the lake - and bears, elk, lynx and sables live in the surrounding forest.
The Trans Siberian Railway
This is the longest continuous rail line on earth, and travellers, both tourists and Russian may just want the ride or others will enjoy interaction and use the rail journey as the core of a varied tour, having stopovers in towns over the routed. Usually travellers take the train West to East, starting in Moscow and ending in Vladivostok, on the way passing through Yaroski, Yekaterinburg (or Exaterinberg) in the Urals, Irkutsk nears the edge of Baikal, and then Khaboroysk.
