The ‘Sinha Royal Dynasties’ ruled over Sri Lanka for over 2000 years, however some areas were invaded by South Indian Kingdoms and then ruled by various dynasties. During the 3rd century Buddhism came to India, and Sri Lanka became a Buddhist Kingdom. Throughout history Sri Lanka has always been an important port.
In 1505 a Portuguese Colonial Mission landed on the island and in the 17th century the Dutch arrived there. Places to visit in Sri Lanka
Here are three suggestions for places to base your visit to Sri Lanka
Beaches
Ceylon is home to many attractive beach resorts, with a number quite close to the capital Colombo. Probably the most popular is Hikkaduwa, famous for its coral reefs and sub-
tropical fish. With the reef just a few meters below the surface, its good to explore with snorkel or by glass-bottomed boat. Scuba dives to a number of local wrecks are
always interesting. Further down the coast some beaches are good for surfing. Other beaches are also popular such as Negombo, which is close to the airport, and Mount Lavinia
only 10km away from Columbo. Particularly attractive are Wadduwa and Kalutara with resorts separated by local villages. Or honeymooners may prefer luxury accommodation in
Bentota.
Kandy
116 km away from Colombo, the hill capital Kandy is a beautiful town, and a popular place for visitors. There are many shrines and temples in and near Kandy where visitors can
marvel at the rare paintings, stone carvings and frescoes. The focal point of Kandy is the golden-roofed Buddhist Temple of Dalada Maligawa, home of a famous relic. Most
exciting is the annual procession in July/August of Esala Perahera when a replica of the relic casket, accompanied by dancers wearing exotic costumes and finery, together with
more than 100 elephants progress around the town for 10 nights. Also dont miss the Paradeniva Gardens with the wonderful profusion of trees, plants and flowers, and this is
THE place for shopping for souvenirs in wood and metals, ceramics, lacquer, jewellery and more.
Nuwara Eliya
In the central highlands, Nuwara Eliya, 180 km from Columbo, is a beautiful town with British colonial architecture ranging from Georgian to Queen Anne. With nicely manicured
lawns and hedges, Anglican Church, an excellent golf course and wonderful parks, this place has an air of nostalgia. Close to Nuwara Eliya is Horton Plains, the highest and
most isolated plateau in Sri Lanka, visitors will enjoy the wide range of wildlife and many species of birds - and will want to follow the bridle paths to the amazing 1000
metre precipice of Worlds End. And, of course, no visit to the hill country should be without an excursion to a tea plantation.
