Known as the place where East meets West, Turkey is an extensive peninsula covering an area of 314,510 square miles and stretching across the continents of Europe and Asia. It is bordered by eight countries including Bulgaria, Greece and Syria and is encircled on three sides by warm seas. Historically a location of great strategic importance, controlling the gateway to The Black Sea, it was once the centre of the Ottoman Empire. It has always been a crossroads for different religions but is now predominantly Islamic. Its population of 76 million speak Turkish, with English being widely used for tourists in the major cities.

Turkey's great historical and archaeological significance attracts visitors from all over the world; it is, in effect, a vast open-air museum set amid diverse and spectacular scenery. Magnificent towns and cities offer architecture and religious shrines and monuments from the great empires and civilisations of the last 10,000 years. Istanbul, the capital, is a city full to the brim with stirring sights, such as the Blue Mosque and the Topkapi Palace.

There are many distinct climactic regions in Turkey but from the point of view of the tourist the period from April to October provides the best weather for holidaying. On the coast summers are hot and humid whilst inland extremes of hot and cold are normal depending on the time of year. It is worth doing some research when planning your holiday to ensure the best weather for the activities you wish to do.

One of the main reasons that travellers return to Turkey time and time again is because of the incredible hospitality of the Turkish people. Their warmth, friendliness and joy in living life simply ensure that visitors always feel very welcome. As Turkey offers so many diverse attractions, there are endless possibilities for different types of holiday.

Major tour operators offer package deals to the beach resorts for those who simply want to luxuriate in the warm waters off the Mediterranean coast. The more adventurous might want to head east to the Nemrut Dagi National Park to take in the breathtaking mountain views and experience the peace and tranquility of this part of Turkey. Most people fly to Turkey from the UK with flights taking about 4-5 hours.

It is worth shopping around for a good deal as prices can be competitive and there are cheap deals to be had .
