Vanuatu is and island nation in the South Pacific. It is an archipelago which is volcanic in origin and despite its relatively remote location, it is thought to have been inhabited since prehistory before being “discovered” by the Spanish in 1605. The archipelago is made up of about 82 small islands stretching over around 800 miles from one end to the other. Not all of these are inhabited and there are several active volcanoes, including Lopevi. The climate is subtropical with a cooler period between April and September.

The area is prone to cyclones, particularly in the wetter months from December to April. The main airport for Vanuatu is at Port-Vila, although it is also a popular stop on by cruise ships in the South Pacific. Once there, “island hopping” is done by boat.

The Vanuata people are very friendly and English is spoken widely, particularly in the towns. Tipping and haggling are not the done things here but a small gift given in exchange for good service is usually appreciated. The local currency is the Vatu, but credit and debit cards are accepted in the towns and there are some ATMs in Port Vila.

Eating out is relatively inexpensive with restaurants catering for all budgets.
