Aosta Valley Hotels Italy

You’ll find the Aosta Valley (Valle d’Aosta) in Italy. It’s north of Turin, with France at its southerly border and Switzerland to its north. Aosta itself is a pretty, old town filled with Roman antiquities. Surrounded by the Alps and peaks of four thousand metres, the Aosta Valley is also home to the most elevated vineyards in Europe. The wine producing area of the Aosta Valley is divided into three – the Valdigne, Valle Centrale and lower Bassa Valley, with the region of Piemonte to the south.

Wine produced in the Aosta Valley is mainly red and from the Pinot Noir or Gamay grape. The Aosta Valley has two major airports nearby – in Geneva and Turin – and offers some of the best skiing and most reliable snowfall in Italy. Many tourists come to the Aosta Valley ski or enjoy winter sports, and it offers some of the best names in skiing resorts – Courmayeurl, Cervinia and La Thuile.

There are though, over twenty amazing pistes. Take a day trip or longer, touring the vineyards of Aosta Valley and stop off at Les Crêtes Winery, a family run vineyard in Villetos offering deep, vibrant red wines. Be sure to explore the Sea Caves and Karst Caves of the Aosta Valley and when in Aosta town wander through the rooms at the Museum.

The local handicrafts make great souvenirs – wood carvings, bowls, plates and furniture abound. The Archeological Museum of Aosta is housed in an 18th century former monastery, and is full of bronzes, glass, buttons and jewels from the Roman times. In Arnad you can see a ruined castle and right behind it is another castle, built in 1480 and on the right bank of the Dora River.

Eating out? You’re in the right place for brilliant Italian food. Try the La Salle in Aosta town or the Ramet Tavern Bistrot in Challand, St. Victor.

The Ristorante La Grolla in Courmayeur is recommended as is the Hotel Castor in Ayas. Get under canvas at Camping Grand Convin in Valpelline or Campsite Tunnel in Etroubles. Take a farm holiday or stay at a farmhouse at Les Vieux Alpages in Doues, Le Reve in Courmayeur or La Roueige in La Salle.

Then there are the more costly hotels – try the Residenza Villamour di Savio, La Salle or the Locanda della Vecchia Miniera in Ollomont.
