The Balearic Islands The Balearic Islands are an archipelago in the west of the Mediterranean Sea near the eatern coast of the Iberian Peninsula. This archipelago forms an autonomous community and the Baleares province of Spain. The four largest islands are Majorca (Mallorca), Minorca, Ibiza and Formentera, which are popular tourist destinations. The capital city of this region is Palma. Majorca is the largest island which has the Tramuntana Mountain chain in the north extending from south-west to north-east over 100km.

In then south there is a chain of small hills, the southern sierra, and the coasts are mainly rocky, with caves and bays. In fact all the islands are mountainous and covered with pine forests, with some undulating hills, plateaus and lowlands. The mild sunny climate with little rain attracts many tourists.

The Balearics have beautiful blue-flag beaches for family holiday but also there are the Ibiza clubs and Majorca hotspots like Magaluf and Palma Nova attracting many young and young at heart people. Rural Balearics offer walking and cycling holidays, nature reserves and birdwatching whilst the towns offer good shopping and historic and cultural sight. In fact Christopher Columbus grew up on Majorca – and there are Roman, Moorish as well as early Christian influences on the island.

There are also watersports and scuba diving in Minorca, not to mention the availability of golf and the popular gay scene in Ibiza Town.
