Basilicate Hotels Italy

Basilicata, or Lucania as it is also known, is situated in the south of Italy. It has borders with Campania to the west and Apulia to the north and east, while in the southwest there is Calabria and the Gulf of Taranto on the Ionian Sea makes up the remaining boarder. Due to its location it is sometimes referred to as the instep of the boot. The regions capital is Potenza, and the area itself is split into two provinces Potenza and Matera. The landscape here is dominated Apennines Mountains, due east there is the Bradano River which defines the eastern border.

It is the most mountainous region in Italy with almost half of its landmass covered by mountains; the other half is mainly made up of hills while only 8% of the land low plain land. Some of the attraction in the capital include Monte Vulture which is a national park based around a volcano. Acerenza is a walled city on a hill that has been referred to as the Eagles Nest; Castel Lagopesole is a stunning castle while Cattedrale (Acerenza) is also an impressive site.

There is also the Archaeological Park (Venosa) which is home to many ruins and a very interesting place to explore. In Matera there is The Sassi and the Park of the Rupestrian Churches of Matera which is the best preserved example of rock cut settlements in all of the Mediterranean. The Old Town is a fascinating place to take a walk through; there is also Museo Laboratorio della Civilta Contadina, the Church of Santa Maria de Idris and the Matera Cathedral.

For a thrill ride like no other and an experience you will never forget head to the starting point of Volo dell'Angelo, Flight of the Angels, in Castelmezzano. This experience lets you travel live a missile at around 80mph across a gorge that is between the town on Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa. If the scenery here doesn’t take your breath away the ride certainly will.

Four star hotels include the Albergo Sextantio Le Grotte Della Civita in Matera, Park Hotel Centro Congressi in Potenza and the La Locanda Delle Donne Monache in Maratea. At five stars there is the Hotel Marinagri in Policoro which has a wellness centre and its own private beach and Palazzo Gattini Luxury Hotel in Matera.
