Bourgogne Hotels France

Bourgogne Bourgogne (Burgundy) is one of France’s 26 regions in the central eastern part of France, around 100km south of Paris and stretching down to Lyon. Bourgogne is bordered by Franche-Comte to the east, Rhone-Alpes to the southeast, Auvergne to the southwest and Champagne-Ardennes and Ile-de-France to the north and Centre to the west. Dijon is the regional capital. The core of the region of Bourgogne are the fertile Rhone and Saone river valleys. The terrain of Bourgogne is varied: in the north is lower Burgundy with sedimentary plains with farms and forests, whilst in the east are the Saone area-plains covered by grassland and fields.

In the middle of the region are calcareous and stony plains, covered with vineyards, and the Morvan Forest, a national park of some quarter of a million hectares. In the south the Maconnais district is part of the Massif Central and has farms and vineyards. Bourgogne also has a number of canals including the famous Canal de Bourgogne.

This wonderful natural environment makes Bourgogne a paradise for lovers of outdoors. Bourgogne is easily accessible from Paris, one the high-speed train, the TGV, and there are excellent highways. The network of canals and other waterways enable visitors to have a leisurely holiday in a barge.

The regional cuisine of boeuf bourguignon, coq au vin and garlic snails attract food lovers and Bourgogne is known to be home to fine wines. The wines produced in this region include Chamberlain, Pommard, Meursault, Chablis and Pouilly-Fuisse. Those interested in history will want to explore, not only Dijon’s Musee des Beaux-Arts and the Palais des Ducs but also the medieval city of Vezelay.
