Brandenburg Hotels Germany

Brandenburg Brandenburg is the fifth largest of the 16 states of the Federal Republic of Germany and is the largest of the new federal states created in 1990 on the re-unification of Germany. Brandenburg lies in the east of German and shares borders with the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the north. It has Poland to the east, Freistaat Sachsen to the south, Saxony-Anhalt to the west and Lower Saxony to the northwest. Potsdam is the state capital and Brandenburg surrounds, but does not include, the national capital/city state of Berlin. The Oder River forms a part of the boder to the east, and the Elbe to the west.

Brandenburg’s is part of the North German Plain and its landscape is largely the result of glaciation with large terminal moraines at each end of the plain left after the ice age. Rolling hills alternate with large sandy plains, and there are low-lying areas in the centre of Brandenburg. Around half the land is agricultural land and around 35% is forest.

Brandenburg has abundant water resources with a number of ice-age lakes and ribbon lakes and there are a number of canals. Brandenburg is well known for its well preserved and protected natural environment. 15 areas were designated following the re-unification of Germany, and there are three Biosphere Reserves, of which the Spreewald is designated as a UNESCO site.
