Bretagne Hotels France

Bretagne Bretagne, or Brittany, is one of France’s 26 regions. Bretagne occupies a peninsula that extends about 150 miles into the Atlantic in the extreme north west of France, and divides the English Channel from the Bay of Biscay. The region is bordered to the north by the English Channel, Basse Normandie (Lower Normandy) to the northeast, Pays-de-la-Loire to the east, the Bay of Biscay to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Bretagne’s (Brittany’s) coast is rugged and indented, rocky land in the north and sandy beaches in the south, and is dotted by fishing villages. Much of the coast has cliffs, capes and islands, rocks and reefs and the different between high and low tide can be as much as 49 feet(at the Bay of Saint-Michel).

And with this great tide height there is also greatest distance between high and low tide mark – up to 12 miles at Saint-Michel. The height and speed of the incoming tide is awesome and the sound deafening. Bretagne’s inland is mainly on the Argoat plateau, where the small farm field are surrounded by hedgerows.

Bretagne has many small villages, several small towns, one city and no urban areas, which it is why is evolved so separate from the rest of France. Rennes is the capital and the only city, Brest, at tje far western tip of the peninsula is a naval base and Lorient, on Bretagne’s southern coast is a major fishing port,.
