Canary Islands Hotels Spain

The Canary Islands The Canary Islands are one of Spain’s Autonomous Communities and comprise an archipelago off the northwest coast of mainland Africa, about 100km west of the border between Morocco and the Western Sahara. The 13 volcanic islands (formed by the Canary Hotspot) include Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, La Graciosa, Alegranza and Montana Clara. The capital for the Canary Island’s autonomous community is shared by the cities Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (the respective capitals of the provinces of Tenerife and Las Palmas. The third largest city is San Cristobel de La Laguna which is a city World Heritage site on Tenerife. The Canary Island’s sandy beaches, subtropical climate splendid scenery, especially Teide National Park and Mount Teide (the third largest volcano in the world), make it a major tourist destination, with over 12 million visitors per year, especially during winter.

All the islands are mountainous and have some semidesert regions and well as fertile valleys. Though tourism is the major industry, farming and manufacturing also are important. Tenerife is the largest island and has the most diverse territory with the volcanic mountains, rocky shores and the cultivated areas for tomatoes and bananas.

The largest cities Santa Cruz and Puerto de la Cruz have interesting historical areas and museums and the latter sun and beaches, whilst the Pyramids of Tenerife on the former are fascinating. On the Canary Island visitors can enjoy sports, water and theme parks, art galleries, gardens and hiking trails. Or they can just enjoy the sun.
