Carinthia Hotels Austria

Carinthia Carinthia (Karnten) is the southernmost of Austria’s nine states, and is situated within the Eastern Alps. It is a land of mountains and lakes including the famous Worther see. Carinthia is mainly comprised of the Klagenfurt basin and the Upper Carinthia mountain ranges. The Carnic Alps and the Karawanken form the border between Carinthia and Italy and Slovenia to the south.

The Hohe Tauern mountain range (containing Grossglockner at 3798m) separates Carinthia from the state of Salzburg in the north, and the Packsattel mountain pass separates Carinthia from the state of Styria. The Drau river valley is continuous into East Tyrol to the west. The capital of Carinthia is Klagenfurt, and other towns include Villach, Heilgenblut, Bleiberg, and Friesach.

The climate is continental with hot and fairly wet summers and long hard winters. Recently winters have been dry. Carinthia is known for its skiing and is also popular with outdoor enthusiasts, hikers, walkers and those wanting to see beautiful scenery.

Lake Millstaettersee is popular for families and water sports lovers, and the Worthersee a top tourist attraction in summer as is Velden at the edge of the Lake and a destination for VIPs. Good for skiing are Nassfield, close to the Italian border, and Turrach close to the border with Styria, and Gerlitzen, close to Villach.
