Castile and Leon Castile and Leon or formally the Community of Castile and Leon is one of the 17 autonomous communities of Spain ,formed from the ancient kingdoms of Leon and the northern part of Old Castile. It is the largest such region in Spain with an area of almost 95K sq km and a population of around 2. 5 million. Castile and Leon shares northern borders with Asturias and Cantabria to the north, the Basque Country and La Rioja to the east, the autonomous community of Madrid, and Castile-La Mancha to the southeast, Extramadura to the south and it abuts against Portugal and Galicia to the west. Most of Castile and Leon sit on the largest part of the dry, high plain of the Meseta Central set in the middle of the Iberian peninsula, and is surrounded by mountains.

, though much of the region is flat, and at an average altitude of around 800m. Castil and Leon also extends to some adjoining valleys such as El Bierzo (Leon), and many secluded mountain valleys such as Laciana (Leon) and Valle de Mena (Burgos). In the north are the mountains of the provinces of Leon and Palencia, also with the tall, thin peaks of the province of Burgos, bisected by the Pancorbo Pass leading from Castile to the Basque country.

The nine provinces of Castile and Leon are: Segovia, Avila, Soria, Burgos, Palencia, Valladolid, Leon, Zamora, and Salamanca (famous for the battle in the Peninsula War).
