Castile-La Mancha Castile-La Mancha is one of the least populous of the 17 autonomous communities of Spain, though the third largest of some 80K sq km. The region in central Spain shares borders with the Communidad de Madrid to the north, Aragon to the north-east, Communidad Valenciana to the east, Murcia to the south east, Andalucia to the south and Extramadura to the west and Castilla y Leon to the north west. Toledo is the capital of Castile-La Mancha, whilst the largest city is Albacete. Castile-La Mancha, is the middle of the Iberian peninsula occupies the greater part of the extensive tableland which is the southern part of the Meseta Central. The region does have, however, a number of mountain ranges including the southern slopes of the Sistema Central in the north, the Sistema Iberico in the north east and the Sierra Morena and Montes de Toledo in the south.

Major attractions for the visitor in Castile-La Mancha are the cities and towns with historical interest such as the magnificent city of Toledo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its medieval buildings, Moorish Mosques, cobbled streets and ancient city walls. The region has many ancient castles, some dating back to the occupation by the Moors. Cuenca, and fascinating village is well worth a visit east of Madrid to see its “casas colgadas” – “hanging houses” clinging to the sides of sheer cliffs.

Cuenca province is also a favourite for hikers. Don Quixote aficionados will want to see the large windmills of Consuegra and Dulcineas’s House in the village of Esquivias.
