Corsica Hotels France

Corsica can be found in the Mediterranean Sea in a south-easterly direction form mainland France, west of Italy and north of the island Sardinia. Although it is closer to Italy than France it comes under the political heading and jurisdiction of Metropolitan France. The capital city on this island is Ajaccio. The island was formed by numerous volcanic eruptions and as a result is the most mountainous island in the Mediterranean. It measure just 114 miles in length and 52 miles in width, it has over 600 miles of coastline with over 200 beaches to choose from.

Its highest peak is Monte Cinto which tops out at 8,878 feet, two thirds of this island is covered by mountains and a further 20% is forested. Even though this is a relatively small island there is plenty to do and see here such as visiting popular hiking trail known as GR20, it is the most famous in all of Europe and is followed by many every year. There is the Museu di a Corsica which is an art museum as well as the Parc Naturel Régional de Corse which is a nature reserve in the interior of the island.

The island has a charming narrow-gauge railway that runs for 144 miles from Bastia to the capital Ajaccio, there is also a branch line that goes from Ponte-Leccia to Calvi. In addition to this there is the Calvi Citadel, Gorges de Spelunca, Bastion de L'Etendard, Eglise Sainte Marie Majeure, Bonifacio Citadel and art museum called Musee Fesch. There are a number of parks and forests here such as the Foret de Vizzavona, Gorges de la Restonica, A Cupulatta and the Iles Lavezzi.

The island also has a number of lovely waterfalls, river and lakes as well as some fantastic beaches. Accommodation on this island is great, starting with the more basic two star Kallisté in the capital and Hotel Restaurant Le Filosorma in Galeria which is only steps away from a beach. At three stars there is the Hotel Costa Salina in Porto-Vecchio and Hôtel Fesch in the capital.

Four star hotels include the Le Golfe hotel in Serra-di-Ferro, Demeure Loredana in Saint-Florent and Best Western Premier Hotel Corsica in Calvi. Five star hotels on this island are the Sofitel Thalassa Porticcio in Porticcio and the Domaine Villas Mandarine in Calvi.
