Crete Hotels Greece
Crete is the fifth largest island in the Med and the largest of the GREEK Islands. Once Crete was at the centre of the Minoan Civilisation (around 2700-1420 B. It’s an extremely mountainous island.
I recall some hairy drives teetering off what appeared to be sheer drops in a hire car I was less than confident in. However, the scenery is to die for. Back in the day, Hercules wanted to honour the birthplace of Zeus and the story goes that he decided to remove all harmful and poisonous animals from the island of Crete.
Whether he succeeded – well, the jury is still out on that, but there IS the most amazing amount of rare, wild flowers on Crete. The main attraction for many visitors is of course the famous Knossos, in Heraklion. Situated in north central Crete, Knossos in Heraklion is the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on the island.
It’s a palace that’s a complete maze of living spaces and workrooms close to a square at the centre. Many are impressed with the “Pithoi” or storage jars on display and the “Throne Room,” with a chair carved from stone. The walls are covered with images of life on Crete during the Bronze Age, and the whole countryside around it is lush and fertile.
After you’ve seen Knossos, be sure to visit the Archaeological Museum of Iraklion. Take in the views at Matala – a small fishing village where the caves became a paradise for hippies in the days of flower power. Up to the minute partying - 21st century-style - is available in Mallia, a party town with a throbbing nightlife.
Try to explore beautiful Chania in the west and visit Elounda’s intriguing “Lagoon of Mermaids” in the sunken city of Olous. Apparently Crete has about 60 olive trees per inhabitant, so olive oil is abundant as is Goat’s cheese, honey and fish all washed down the local brew – Raki. From the large, luxury hotels with all facilities, swimming pools and beauty salons to camping or family-owned rental apartments, it’s all up for grabs on the island of Crete.
Try the exclusive GK Beach Hotel or Blue Palace Resort & Spa - Exclusive Collection if money is no object.
