Galicia Hotels Spain

Galicia Galicia is one of the 17 autonomous communities in northwest Spain, with origins in the ancient kingdom of Galicia. It has borders with Portugal to the south, the Spanish communities of Castile and Leon, and Asturias to the east, the Atlantic Ocean to the wst and Bay of Biscay to the north. Galicia has four provinces, A Coruna, Lugo, Ourense and Pontevedra, and in addition to its continental territories the region also includes the archipelagos of Cies, Ons, Salvora as well as a number of islands, including the Malveiras and Sisargas Islands. Around 2. 8 million inhabitants of Galicia are concentrated mainly in two coastal areas: from Ferrol to A Coruna in the northwest and from Vilagarcia to Vigo on the southwest.

The capital of the region is Santiago de Compostela in A Coruna, and Vigo, in Pontevedra has the largest population. Inland Galicia has relatively low mountains. There are many rivers several of them feeding down gentle slopes in narrow river valleys.

One remarkable feature of Galicia is that of the presence of firth-like inlets along the coast that are submerged estuaries. These are called rias, and the Ria de Arousa in Pontevedra has the largest surface are of any in Spain. Additionally, all along the Galician coast are various archipelagos near the mouths of the rias, providing protected deepwater harbours and habitats for seabirds.

Some estimates say that the Galician coast has more than 300 archipelagos, islets and rocks. This 1300km of coastline provides a bounty of seafood for Galician cookery – the most famous dishes being octopus, seafood stew and scallops. The green, mountainous parts of Galicia provide a wonderful resources for the outdoor enthusiast looking for peace and enjoyment, whilst the small and medium-sized beaches are much less crowded than those on other coasts with the benefits of wonderful food !.
