Introduction The smallest province in China, 97% of the territory is located on the Hainan Island itself, with the rest being made up of over 200 small islands off the southern coast of the country. Haikou on the northern edge of the island is the capital, whilst Sanya is another popular tourist destination. Geography Hainan island is about the same size as Belgium. It is separated from the Leizhou Peninsula by the Qiongzhou Straight and has the Gulf of Tonkin to its west side. Compared to other places in China, it has a fairly sparse population.

It is also less mountainous that other islands in the same area. Top 5 Experiences 1. Nanwan Monkey Island Situated in Lingshui on the south coast of Hainan, the Nanwan Monkey Island is a nature reserve specifically dedicated to the preservation and protection of macaque monkeys.

Since opening in 1965, the island has become home to over 2,000 monkeys and is a popular destination for tourists. The longest over-water cable car in the country is also found here, stretching a massive 2,138 metres. 2.

The Yangpu Ancient Salt Field Found in Yantian village, on the Yangpu Peninsula, the Yangpu Ancient Salt Field is a special archaeological site dating back to around 800 AD. The site features a collection of over 1,000 stones have been cut flat on top, with a thin rim around the edge to hold water. The surface of the stones fill with water at high tide which, when evaporated, leaves behind salt which can be collected.

Today, the villagers have diversified, with only a small group continuing to collect salt using the stones. 3. Luobi Cave Translated into English as “hanging pen cave”, this archaeological site is found under the west side of Yin Ridge, just over 9 miles from Sanya City in the Hainan Province.

Its name comes from the two large pen-shaped stalactite rock formations that hang down from the cave’s roof. The cave features a number of inscriptions that were believed to have been carved into the cave walls in the 13th century. Fossilised animal bones, human teeth and old tools made from stone and bone have been found in the cave.

Legend tells that anyone who is touched by the cave’s dripping water will be transformed into a talented writer! 4. The Macaque Cave Located outside Dongfang City on the Macaque Ridge, the Macaque Cave covers over 2,000 square metres. The entrance of the cave is packed with trees and visitors can spot the unusual rock formation said to resemble an old woman.

There are also numerous stalactites shaped like animals. 5. Nanshan Temple The Nanshan Buddhist Temple is found in Sanya.

Its name means ‘South mountain temple’. The temple and nearby Guan Yin of the South Sea of Sanya statue make up a popular tourist area known as the Nanshan Buddhism Cultural Tourism Zone.
