Haute-Normandie Hotels France

Haute-Normandie Haute-Normandie (Haute-Normandie) is one of France’s 26 regions. It was created in 1984 when Normandy was divided in to two regions: Basse-Normandie and Haute-Normandie. To the north of the region is the English Channel, whilst Picardie is to the east, Ile-de-France to the south east, Centre to the south and the western border is with Basse-Normandie. The historically important Rouen is the regional capital, though the largest city is Le Havre. Haute-Normandie is mostly lowland part of the Paris Basin drained by the River Seine.

To the north of Rouen are the white chalky cliffs of the Cote d’Albatre and towns like the old seaside towns of Dieppe and the architecturally interesting Fecamp. Le Havre, razed during WWII but rebuilt, also sits on this coast. The rural village of Giverny, on the right bank of the Seine 80km west of Paris , is famous for being the home of Claude Monet , and his home and garden with the lily pond have been lovingly restored.

Rouen the capital is known for the remarkable Notre Dame Cathedral, and the wonderful medieval centre – and has almost 2000 half-timbered buildings – as well as the Gros Horloge, a 16th century astronomical clock. Then there is Evreux, a cathedral town in the Iton river valley, with a number of notable architectural features including nearby Roman remains.
