Heilongjiang Sheng Hotels China

Heilongjiang Province, is found in the far northeast corner of China. Heilongjiang means, Black Dragon River, which flows along the border of Russia with Inner Mongolia to the west. The harsh winters that bring snow and ice to this region, mean that its traditions and festivals, of Russian influence are very much alive here. Harbin, being the capital and most northernmost city, has been particularly influenced by Russia as seen by the architecture and food. There is a definite cooking tradition here with many dishes originating from Manchu cuisine and is greatly influenced by the weather.

The main food is wheat based with raw vegetables, fish and preserved foods. The Harbin International Snow and Ice Festival, famous for its spectacular ice sculptures, have been here every year from 5 January, until the weather warms up. It is very cold so suitable clothing is necessary.

During winter months, it is worth visiting Zhaolin Park in Harbin to see the famous ice sculptures. There are two National Forest Parks to visit and for the sporty, Yabuli, which is one of the largest skiing areas in China. If you are looking for a more peaceful trip then go to the beautiful National Nature Reserve at Zhalong, home to 260 species of birds.

There is an active Buddhist temple in Harbin aptly named Temple of Heavenly Bliss and the Museum plenty of boat trips on the river, by going to Mohe you will get the best Aurora Borealis show during the winter months. Just on the outskirts of the city is the Siberian Tiger Preserve containing hundreds of these beautiful endangered species in multiple huge pens. Alternatively take a trip to the Wudalianchi Lakes, which, after a volcanic eruption in 1719 and 1721 formed the sight that can be seen today.

Accommodation There are many places to stay in the cities, which include budget hotels, where you might not get English-speaking staff to the more expensive hotels and Holiday Inns. In Harbin, there are quite a few budget hotels but it is best to look around, two of which are the Meijia Apartment and the Kazy International Youth Hostel. Hotels that are more expensive include the Harbin Modern Hotel and the Shangri-La.
