Hesse Hesse (Hessen) is both a cultural region and one of Germany’s 16 states. The state is situated in west central Germany and borders to the north and clockwise, Lower Saxony, Thuringa, Bavaria, Baden-Wurttemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and North-Rhine Westphalia. The state of Hesse (Hessen) extends from the Sauerland region in the north to the Odenwald forest in the south and from the Rhon Hills in the east to the Taunus hills in the west. The scenery includes heathland, ancient woodland, moorland, and scenic lakes and rivers. The principal rivers are the Fulda and Eder in the north and the Main and Rhine in the south.

The largest city of Hesse is Frankfurt am Main, and the state capital Wiesbaden with cities in the Rhine Main Area including Darmstadt, Offenbach and Limburg. In addition to the attractive, diverse scenery, Hesse has castles and palaces, picturesque medieval towns and charming cities. Wiesbaden the capital has a casino and excellent shopping, Frankfurt is excellent for a city break.
