Hokkaido Hotels Japan

The region of Hokkaido is located in the north of Japan is the second largest and the least developed of Japan’s four main islands. The unspoiled landscape of Hokkaido naturally attracts those seeking to explore the outdoors and the region’s weather also lends its self to the area’s outdoor activities, with its heavy snowfall during winter months suiting skiers and snowboards, and warm summer months suiting hikers and cyclists. There are many sightseeing opportunities for those wishing to explore the region. The large city of Asahikawa, located in the centre of the region is not a particularly popular tourist destination; however it is home to the best and most popular zoo in the country. For the outdoor lovers, the large national park of Daisetsuzan with dense forests, mountains and unspoiled landscapes it is home to deer and brown bears and a haven for hikers.

During the winter months, tourists can experience the Asahikawa Winter Festival which takes place for just over a week in February annually. The Festival offers some of the biggest snow sculptures with one huge stage sculpture used for music performances. As a final note, very little of the Hokkaido region suffered damage during the recent earthquake and tsunami – there was only minor damage at the south of Hokkaido and this has now been resolved and the entire island is safe and open to tourists.
