Hubei is a province located in central China. The literal translation of the name is “north of the lake” which refers to its positioning just north of Lake Dongting. The capital of the province is Wuhan. The Hubei province covers an area of 185,900 sq km which is the 14th largest in China. The population is 59,490,000 which is the 9th highest.
It is surrounded by Henan Province to the north, Jianxi to the southeast, Hunan to the south, Anhui to the east, Sichuan to the west and Shaanxi to the northwest. Hubei is thought to be one of the originating places of the Chinese people. Today many ethnic minority groups inhabit the province, including Miao, Tujia and Dong.
Hubei has a subtropical monsoonal climate. The summers are hot and humid and the winters are usually dry. Average temperatures are around 15-17 degrees Celsius.
The best times to visit the region would be during Spring and Autumn. The area is steeped in history and contains many cultural relics. Ancient towers, city remains, temples and much more can be found in the province.
The Hubei provincial museum is host to the heaviest musical instrument in the world, a set of bronze chime bells unearthed from the Tomb of Marquis Yi of the Zeng State. The instrument is made up of 65 pieces and weighs a staggering 2,567 kg. The biggest bell is 5 foot high and weighs 203.
6 kg. Wudang Mountain is a sacred Taoist mountain with hundreds of temples and palaces. Another major tourist attraction is East Lake, which is the biggest lake within a city in the whole of China.
It is situated on the eastern side of Wuchang City. There are three famous towers just south of the Yangtze River, one being called Yelllow Crane Tower. Hubei also lays claim to the world’s largest water conservation project, known as the Three Gorges Dam Project, which is just outside of Yichang City.
Other places of interest include the Shennongia national reservation, which is a dense widerness that, ever since the discovery of traces of wild people there, has become shrouded in mystery and intrigue. There’s also Chibi (Red Cliff) where a famous battle took place and the historical city of Jingzhou which is famed for Three Kingdom battles. There is a lavish 5-star hotel called Marco Polo Wuhan which overlooks the Yangtze River.
Then there is Wuhan Jin Jiang International which is another 5-star hotel located at the heart of the business district and financial street. Then for a lower cost accommodation there is the 3-star JJ Inns –Wuhan Ziyang road which is next to Ziyang Lake, or the JJ Inns Wuhan Shuiguohu which is next to the museum and university.
