Indiana Hotels United States
Indiana is the one of the smallest states in America and located in the Mid West and Great Lakes Region of the country, however its capital city, Indianapolis, is the second largest state capital in the country. Indiana is bordered to the north by Michigan, to the east by Ohio and to the west by Illinois, while to the south the Ohio River separates the state from Kentucky. The state's name means Indian Land and was applied to the region by American Congress when the territory was incorporated into the Union in 1816. The highest point in the state is Hoosier Hill, and interestingly residents of Indiana are known as Hoosiers. The term is thought to be derived from a frontier greeting of Who's here? that was subsequently corrupted to Hoosier.
The state of Indiana has much civil war history and a wide variety of other attractions to see and visit. Such as the ancient glaciers formed in the Sugar Creek bed that now makes up the Turkey Run State Park. The park is situated about an hour south of West Lafayette, Indiana, there are trails to walk, horses to ride, or why not rent canoes to see the canyon at its best.
If it’s history that you’re after, St. Meinrad Arch abbey is one of only two Arch abbeys in the U. S, situated in Spencer County, Indiana, it was founded by monks from Switzerland in 1854.
The Benedictine monks, who still live at Saint Meinrad, dedicate their lives to prayer and work. Guests often join the monks in prayer at the Arch abbey Church, and in 1999 the monks started selling handcrafted wooden caskets and cremation urns from the Abbey, dedicating all profits to sustain it. For children the town Santa Claus, Indiana may hold special interest.
The town, originally called Santa Fe was renamed Santa Claus in 1856 when the town applied for a post office and was told a name change was required. The residents chose Santa Claus as they wanted to keep ‘Santa’ in the name. As you would expect the town has a lot of Christmas themed sights and activities and also boasts one of the oldest theme parks, now named Holiday World & Splashin' Safari which are located off Highways 162 and 245 in Christmas Blvd, Santa Claus, Indiana.
A state like Indiana has hotels to fit any budget from Days Inn’s and the Best Western Country Suites Hotel in Indianapolis to the 5 star Conrad Indianapolis. The historic Turkey Run Inn is convenient to explore the state park, or the Comfort Inn, Ferdinand is just minutes from Holiday World and Splashing Safari.
