Kagoshima-ken Hotels Japan

This southernmost area in Kyushu is is dominiated by the volcano called Sakurajima which has three peaks but only Minami-dake is active. Visitors are not able to climb the volcano but there are several observation points with small walkways across the huge lava flow. To the north is the Kirishima Yaku National Park which is great for hiking and observing volcanoes. The day walk from Ebino Plateau is one of the finest volcanic hikes in Japan. From the summit of Karakuni-dake at 1700 metres to the summit of Takachiho-no-mine at 1574 metres where the scenery is breathtaking.

Avoid the rainy season in May and June however. Shorter walks in this area are a lake stroll on the plateau or around Karakuni-dake. The area has an impressive 75 metre waterfall Senriga-taki and beautiful wild azaleas grow in the area which will be of interest to plant lovers.

There are also hot springs. Visit Uenohara a place of primitive civilization almost 10,000 years old. Of the Jomon-era they have been identified as the oldest of the period and there is a small museum and research station of great interest.

There is a hot spring resort at Ibusuki 50 km from Kagoshima. The station at Ibusuki has information on directions. Renting a car is a good idea (www.

ekiren. co. jp in Japanese).

Also from Kagoshima-Shuo station where there is a second floor tourist information booth. Trams are timely and cheap in Kagoshima. Take the ferry to Sakurajima.

Hotel Syusien in Ibusaki has a great reputation with 99% of guests enjoying the stay. In Kagoshima go for the Castle Park Hotel.
