Kashmir Hotels India
The Kashmir Valley lies within the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir in the very north of India. This part of India is bordered by Pakistan, China and Tibet. Its main city is Srinagar. Access to the rest of India is via the Banihal Tunnel. The region of Kashmir is set amidst the breathtaking scenery of the impressive snow-capped mountain ranges of the Himalayas, Zanaskar and Pir Punjal.
This fairytale backdrop has led to the claim that this area is “Paradise on Earth”. Some also call it the “Switzerland of the East”. This is a land of overwhelming beauty and extraordinary diversity; wild rivers, gushing waterfalls, verdant forests and exotic plants.
Boasting some of the highest and most rugged landscapes in the world, Kashmir is the ultimate trekking destination. Trekkers can choose to travel independently or as part of an organised group on week long or even day trips led by nomadic shepherds. May to October are the best months for this.
Along the way walkers can breathe in pure air and be captivated by the amazing geology and the diverse flora and fauna that is to be found in this region. Those looking for an even greater challenge might want to participate in a serious mountaineering expedition. Popular peaks to climb are Kolahoi (5425m) and Harmukh (5148m).
White water rafting is another exciting way to experience the drama of Kashmir's vast landscape. Pahalgam's Lidder River is suitable for beginners, whilst the River Sindh in Sonamarg is far more challenging. For a more sedate water ride, boats can be hired on some of the region's many beautiful lakes.
The charming Shikara boat rides offer a distinctly local experience on the Dal and Nagin lakes. Cycling is another popular way to explore Kashmir. A sturdy mountain bike will provide an opportunity to see this area close up; its villages, towns and spectacular scenery.
Horse riding is also readily available in many of the resorts. Skiing is one of the major attractions in the area with the Himalayan resort of Gulmarg being one of the highest in the world. The season commences around mid December and runs to mid April.
Other activities for tourists include: paragliding, golf, birdwatching and fishing. The historic city of Srinagar is well worth a visit. A stroll through its streets observing its shrines and temples will offer a glimpse into the culture and heritage of this fascinating part of the world.
The range and provision of hotels in the region's capital Srinagar is very good. Hotels which overlook the Dal Lake are considered to be the most desirable but cost more. The LaLit Grand Palace Hotel and the Centaur Lake View offer luxurious accommodation and first rate facilities.
Three star accommodation can be found in Hotel Mount in Pahalgam and the Hotel Zahgeer continental in Gulmarg. There are plenty of budget hotels available throughout the region, such as Hayat Hotel in Kohan, Dalgate and the Kashmir International Hotel at Lal Chowk.
