The state of Berlin can be found in the east of Germany, west of the Polish border and is the capital of the region shares the same name. The local terrain is marshy and the area enjoys a humid continental climate. Many parts of present-day Berlin and its region extend onto the low plains on the two sides of the Spree Valley. The borough of Spandau lies partially within the Berlin Urstromtal and partially on the Nauen Plain to the west of Berlin. Berlin itself is also well known for the techno carnival Love Parade, club transmediale and the cultural festival Berliner Festspiele, which includes the jazz festival JazzFest Berlin. The region and its capital are home to more than 150 museums.
The Altes Museum displaying the bust of Queen Nefertiti, the Neues Museum, Alte Nationalgalerie, Pergamon Museum, and Bode Museum are popular attractions. The Jewish Museum is an obvious pull and has an exhibition of German-Jewish history which spans 2000 years. The German Museum of Technology in Kreuzberg enjoys a collection of historical technical artefacts and the Museum für Naturkunde has the largest mounted dinosaur in the world.
The region is a must for history lovers. The area is also well known for its theatre, music and opera culture and its churchesThe regions is known for its diverse gastronomy which reflects its history. Traditional foods include dishes using pork, goose, fish, peas, beans, cucumbers and potatoes.
The Zoologischer Garten Berlin is the most visited zoo in Europe and offers visitors the most diverse range of species in the world. The Botanischer Garten is one of the largest and most diverse gardens in the world.
