Languedoc-Roussillon Hotels France

Languedoc-Rousillon Languedoc Rousillon is one of the 26 regions of France, in the south-central area of the country. It is a large region, stretching from Spain in the south to the Rhone in the East. Languedoc-Rousillon consist of five departments, and its southern borders reach from the commune of Banyuls in the department of Pyrenees-Orientales on the border with Spain; then Andorra and the Mediterranean Sea. Its northern borders are shared with the French regions of Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur, Rhone-Alpes, Auvergne and Midi-Pyrennees. Languedoc-Rousillon is outlined by two mountains – south west by the Pyrenees and west by the Cevennes, part of the Massif Central ,which dominate the area.

The area also has 17 ski resorts the most popular being Font Romeu and Les angles in the Pyrenees. Montpellier is the capital city of Languedoc-Rousillon as well as the administrative capital of the department of Herault. The area has some 2800 sq km growing vines and is the largest wine producing region in the world, accounting for more than a third of France’s total wine production.

Languedoc-Rousillon’s coastal region with Mediterranean Sea stretches to over 40K hectares, it has popular sea resorts, and 42 beaches of many different kinds, though some famous ones are less than beautiful and over-developed. Perpignan, Languedoc’s most southerly city has wonderful beaches with a backdrop of the Pyrenees. Languedoc-Rousillon also has many historical places to see – cathedrals, chateaux and castles, particularly the fortified castles known as Cathar Castles.

The area also has a number of World Heritage sites such as Carcassonne, the Canal du Midi and the Pont du Gard.
