Latium Hotels Italy

Latium (Lazio) Lazio (Latium) is one of Italy’s 20 regions situated in central Italy, on the western coast. Lazio was formerly known to English travellers by its Roman name, Latium, though this name is not now in common usage. Lazio is bordered by Tuscany, Umbria and Marche to the north, whilst Abruzzo and Molise are to the east, Campania is to the south, and the Tyrrhenian Sea is on the western coast. It is the region that surrounds Rome, the Italian capital. To be truthful, with so much focused on Rome itself, the region of Lazio is often quiet and rather faded, and tourists may appreciate the unspoilt countryside.

Lazio’s coast is low-lying and sandy, interrupted by the headlands of Circeo and Orlando. The Ponzian Island, part of Lazio, lie opposite the southern coast. On the right of the Tiber the Lazio Prepennines include three volcanic-origin mountains with craters now occupied by lakes Bolsena, Vico and Bracciano.

There are a number of other mountain ranges in Lazio including the Reatini, with a peak of Terminillo (2213m) and the Albani and Lepini Hills. Along the coast and in the lowlands stretches the Mediterranean scrub, with wild laurel giving way inland and on higher ground to white oak, hornbeam and other deciduous trees. The Montidella Tolfa area is still partly a wilderness with areas of rough ground and woodland and scrub, and grazing for herds of half-wild cattle.

Rome is the principal and most popular tourist destination in Lazio – and as well as the many pleasures of the city the Province of Rome has other popular tourist destinations such as Tivoli and Frascati. To the north of Lazio is Viterbo, a historic town with a well-preserved medieval centre, and the province also has the Lakes Vico and Bolsena, ans splendid gardens at Caprarola, and Etruscan remains at Tarquinia and Vulci. The Province of Latina runs along the coast and has sandy beach resorts of Sperlonga and the Pontine Islands.
