Liguria Hotels Italy

Liguria Liguria is the third smallest of Italy’s 20 regions, situated in the north-west of Italy on the coast. It is a narrow strip of land around the top of Italy’s boot, that curves north west around the Mediterranean and reaches from Tuscany to the French border. This area is often known as the “Italian Riviera”. Lying on the Ligurian Sea Liguria has Piedmont to the north and Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany to the east, with the French border to the west. The capital of the region is Genoa.

Liguria is a mountainous and hilly region. The generally rocky coastal strip rises up to the Apennines and Maritime Alps which increase in height up to the north west where the Alps meet the sea. The geography has led to the famously mild climate and famous gardens.

The region is divided into two parts: the Riviera di Ponente (to the west) from Ventimiglia to Genoa, and the Riviera di Levante (to the east) from Genoa to La Spezia. The region is popular with tourists for its beautiful beaches, scenic little twons and excellent food. Tourists with interest in history will want to visit Genoa with its museums and historic palazzi.

On the Riviera nearer to France Sanremo and Bordighera are often combined with trips into France. There are good local transport to France, inland villages and even to winter skiing resorts. The coastal route south goes to other popular resorts such as Rapallo, Sestri Levante before reaching the famous mountainous coastline of the Cinque Terre – the five fishing villages along the beautiful steep coast – just the destination for keen walkers.

Portofino is also on many tourist lists of places to visit – and much more.
