Lombardy Hotels Italy

Lombardy Lombardy is one of Italy’s 20 regions, and is one of the most populous and waelthiest regions in Italy. Lombardy is bordered by Switzerland to the north and by the Italian regions of Emilia-Romagna to the south, Trentino-Alto, Adige/Sudtirol and Veneto to the east and Piedmont to the west. The terrain consists of mountains (including the Lepontine, Rhaetian, and the Bergamo Alps) hills and plains – the latter both the Alta (high plains) and Bassa (low plains). The region’s inhabits the greater part of the Po Valley. The great Lombard Lakes are Lake Maggiore Lake Lugano (also shared with Switzerland), Lake Como, Lake Iseo and Lake Idro and also Lake Garda – the largest Italian lake.

The regional capital of Lombardy is Milan (Milano). Other important cities are Bergamo, Brescia, Como, Leccio, Lodi, Varese, Sondrio, Pavia, Cremona and Mantua. Lombardy is known to be the cradle of Romanesque architecture with beautiful examples in each major city.

Milan Cathedral is the most striking monument of the Gothic period and the Renaissance period is demonstrated by many splendid palaces and churches. Many people believe that the most picturesque piazza in Italy can be found in Bergamo, and Mantua’s Ducal Palace has an amazing cycle of frescoes by Mantegna. Just down the Po river is Cremona – where violins are made, and as you drive towards Piedmont you’ll pass the miles of rice fields where risotto rice is grown.
