Maine Hotels United States

The State of Maine in New England is flanked on two sides by Canada a third by the Atlantic Ocean and New Hampshire to the southwest. Sometimes called the “Pine Tree State”, its hardwood forests cover much of the area. There are also the rocky coastlines in the north and long, sandy beaches in the south. Home to many shipbuilding companies, Maine is probably most famous for its shellfish – namely lobsters and clams. The species “Homarus americanus” flourishes in Maine’s cold waters and is caught mostly in lobster traps or gillnets.

There is also a Blueberry (it’s part of the State’s symbol) harvest that rivals any other state. With so much variation on offer in Maine, it’s hard to pick just a few wonderful spots to see. Go Whale Watching with the Bar Harbour Whale watch company and visit the fantastic (and only) National park of Acadia in Maine.

Head for the Appalachian National scenic trail which includes areas under the protection of the National Park Service. Then think outside of the box on a visit to the “Big Chicken Barn” for books and antiques in Acadia. You’ll love Maine’s fantastic beaches.

Take in the rocky coast around the Kennebunk River and Swanville’s beaches at Swan Lake State Park. The area is also blessed with many refreshing, natural Swimming Holes. At the right time of the year, try out the snowmobile trails, which number some of the finest in America.

There’s one giant Moose to be found at Len Libby’s chocolates in Scarborough. Crafted totally from 1,700 of milk chocolate it greets all visitors! The Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay are definitely worth a visit as is the Grotto Cascade Park with its lit up water fountains, on State Street, Bangor. No visit to Maine would be complete without a trip to the “Old Port” of Greater Portland and the Portland Head Lighthouse.

There are around sixty lighthouses to choose from in Maine, but two much loved ones are Cape Neddick (Nubble) Light in York and the “West Quoddy Head Light” in Lubec. Don’t forget you can eat the BEST seafood and LOBSTER. Try The Lobster Dock Boothbay Harbour or Warren’s Lobster House, Kittery – oh and try the Empire Grill’s famous Muffins! The Rangeley Lakes area is great for camping while in Maine.

Or there’s the up market Stage Neck Inn at York Harbour or the more reasonably priced Kennebunkport Inn, at Kennebunkport. Something for all pockets! .
