The Northern Territory can be found in the central-northern region of Australia; to its west is Western Australia which takes up the entire western half of the country. To the east is Queensland, which is the second largest area by mass, while in the south is South Australia. The bodies of water that cover the northern border of this federal territory are the Timor Sea, the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Arafura Sea. The capital of this region is Darwin, while other major cities or towns include Alice Springs, Katherine and Tennant Creek. Although this is the third largest area in Australia it is the least populated, with an estimated total of 230,000 and for an area that measure over 500,000 square miles that is a very low figure.

There is only one paved road in the entire territory and this links Darwin to Southern Australia, all of the major towns are situated along this road known as Stuart Highway. This region has two climates, in the north and around the area of Darwin it has a tropical climate which has very high humidity and two main seasons. November to April is the wet season this is when thunderstorms are common place, monsoon rains and tropical cyclones are also frequently seen.

Afternoon humidity can reach 70% and temperatures average somewhere in the 30’s. May to October is the dry season; the coldest months in this area are June and July where the lowest temperatures recorded are 14 degrees. The central and southern area of this region is classified as semi-arid; most of this area is desert and has very little rain fall.

The hottest months here are from October to March, the highest temperature on record in this area was 48 degrees, while the lowest was -7. 5 degrees. This region of Australia has many national parks but it is probably best known for Ayers Rock which is situated in the Ulu?u-Kata Tju?a National Park.

Kata Tjuta is the other main feature of this national park; it is also known as Mount Olga and consists of 36 dome shaped rock formations. There are a number of national parks in this region of Australia such as Kakadu National Park, Watarrka National Park which is home to Kings Canyon and Mataranka which has two thermal springs which are constantly running at around 32 degrees. Other attractions in this beautiful region of Australia include the Sea Darwin, which is an eco tour around the harbour area; Aquascene also in Darwin is a definite must see, at high tide hundreds of fish come towards the shore to be feed by the public.

The Museum & Art Gallery of the Northern Territory can also be found in the capital. In Alice Springs there is the Aboriginal Australia Culture Centre where you can learn to play the didjeridu and the National Pioneer Women's Hall of Fame. In Red Centre there is Arltunga which is a ghost town.
